Aeronautica Militare: ambulance transported in flight from Bari to Rome for a newborn in imminent danger of life

Protected by the thermal cradle inside an ambulance, the little patient was transferred with a C130J of the 46th Air Force Brigade

A C-130J transport aircraft belonging to the 46th Air Force Brigade has recently landed at Ciampino airport, transporting an ambulance from Bari Palese airport carrying a newborn in imminent danger of life.

The request for emergency medical transport from the “Di Venere” Hospital in Bari to the “Bambino Gesù” Pediatric Hospital in Rome was received by the Prefecture of Bari at the Top Situation Room of the Air Squad Command. All the procedures necessary to activate the crew of the 46th Pisa Air Brigade in operational readiness for this kind of missions were immediately started.

In particular, the management and coordination of the mission was conducted by the Operations Room of the Aerospace Operations Command of the Air Force based in Poggio Renatico which activated the 46th Air Brigade, one of the flight departments of the Italian Air Force which ensures the transport of personnel and material wherever it is required.

The particular type of transport required a large carrier, and for this reason the C-130J was identified, capable of transporting an ambulance with the little patient on board.

A team of specialized medical personnel will assist the newborn throughout the transfer flight. Once the military aircraft landed in Ciampino, the ambulance disembarked and continued its journey towards the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome.

Air Force crews and transport aircraft are ready day and night, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day to ensure, where required and deemed necessary for reasons of urgency, the medical transport of people in imminent danger of life, transport organs or medical teams as on this occasion. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of intervention by the aircraft of the 24st Wing of Ciampino, the 31th Wing of Pratica di Mare and the 14th Air Brigade of Pisa. For this kind of rescue missions, where there are particular operational needs, helicopters of the 46th Wing are also used.
