Military Air Force: life-saving flight for a 1-day-old baby

The tiny patient was transported from Cagliari to Rome with a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Stormo

In the late afternoon of today, a child of just one day of life in imminent danger of life, was urgently transported from Cagliari Elmas airport to Rome, aboard a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force . For the newborn, hospitalized at the "Duilio Casula" Polyclinic of Monserrato in Cagliari, an emergency medical transport was necessary and the subsequent hospitalization at the "Bambino Gesù" pediatric hospital in Rome.

The request for transport, as required by the emergency procedures, was received from the Prefecture of Cagliari at the Summit Situation Room of the Air Force Command, the operations room of the Air Force which has among its duties that of arranging and managing this type of missions through the activation of one of the aircraft that the Armed Forces keeps ready 24 hours a day, in various bases, for this kind of need.

The little patient was boarded at the Sardinian airport around 16.30 pm and traveled, assisted during the flight by a medical team, inside a thermal cradle necessary in such situations. After an hour of flight, the military plane reached Ciampino airport where the little one continued his journey to the Roman hospital. The aircraft then resumed operational readiness service.

The Flight Departments of the Air Force are available to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with vehicles and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger to life, but also to organs, medical teams or ambulances. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this kind of intervention by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
