The emergency medical transport of a child just one day old who was hospitalized with severe heart dysfunction at the "Duilio Casula" Hospital in Monserrato, in the province of Cagliari, and in need of be transferred as soon as possible to the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan.
The ambulance flight, requested by the Prefecture of Cagliari and arranged by the Top Situation Room of the Air Squad Command of the Italian Air Force, was carried out with a Falcon 50 of the 31 ° Stormo di Ciampino, one of the flight departments of the Armed Force that ensures 24 24 hours a day, all year round, aircraft and crews ready to take off in a short time for this kind of mission. The newborn, accompanied by both parents, was assisted during the flight by a medical team.
Having carried out all the procedures necessary for the carrying out of the mission by the military crew, the aircraft took off from Ciampino airport in the late afternoon to head first towards Cagliari airport where the child and the team embarked, and then headed for on Milan Linate for the subsequent transfer by land in the evening to the Lombard specialized treatment center that awaited him.
Air Force crews and transport aircraft are ready every single day of the year, 24 hours a day, to ensure, where required and deemed necessary for urgent reasons, the medical transport of people in imminent danger of life, organs or medical teams. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of intervention, in support of citizens, by the aircraft of the 24st Wing of Ciampino, the 31th Wing of Pratica di Mare and the 14th Air Brigade of Pisa.
Where there are specific operational needs, the Air Force also employs the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
