Afghanistan, meeting at the Farnesina of European and US Special Envoys

Yesterday, Undersecretary of State Di Stefano chaired the meeting of the Special Envoys for Afghanistan from Europe (Italy, France, Germany, Norway, United Kingdom) and the United States at the Farnesina. The Senior Civilian Representative of NATO in Afghanistan, a representative of the UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the Qatar Special Envoy for conflict mediation also took part. The delegates from the Afghan Republican Government and the Taliban Political Bureau also took part in video links from Kabul and Doha. The meeting, which took place between two sessions of the Doha peace talks, made it possible to identify some fundamental negotiating lines that will be articulated upon the reopening of the negotiating table in Qatar. The Italian initiative has given new life to the political process for Afghanistan, which is fundamental in a phase in which diplomatic efforts must be multiplied, to prevent further violence in the country and to arrive without delay at a shared, lasting and sustainable ceasefire. . The future stability and institutional structure of Afghanistan can only depend on the choices of the Afghans, but the international community has the duty to suggest work paths and open compromise platforms. As part of this exercise, the Rome meeting confirmed the commitment of Italy and the countries represented to support mediation and in particular to support the action of the United States for a political agreement between the parties. The opportunity for the involvement of regional partners, starting from Pakistan, and of the main international actors was also reiterated to exert targeted pressure and achieve timely and visible results on the path of restoring peace and security in the country.
