Aid to Ukraine still blocked in US Congress

A predictable twist casts more and more shadows on the future of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The news is disruptive and in some ways worrying. The spokesperson of the US Security Council warned the allies and Ukraine directly, John Kirby who explicitly said in a press conference that the funding approved by the American Congress has been exhausted, and US support in the war against Russia has ended. John Kirby's statements cast a shadow on Kiev's hopes of reconquering the territories occupied by the enemy. However, the debate between Democrats and Republicans still remains heated over whether to grant a further aid package. The American Congress has only one week to re-negotiate public spending items, including further aid to Ukraine and in any case before January 19th, the date on which a partial shutdown.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky launched an appeal to obtain more robust military support in the missions in the Baltic countries, thus supporting the thesis of the community countries strongly convinced of the necessity and feasibility of a Ukrainian victory on the field within the European Union.

At the same time, Dmitry Medvedev once again threatened the West, warning against the supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine, capable of hitting launch bases on Russian territory. In perspective, Medveddev said, the scenario of aescalation nuclear because clause 19 of the Russian doctrine on the use of nuclear weapons could be triggered in response to an aggression that puts the existence of the state at risk.

Zelensky he forcefully reiterated that any "pause" in Ukraine's defense would favor Russian rearmament and allow Moscow to "crush" his country. From Estonia, the Ukrainian leader urged European leaders to fulfill their commitments to deliver the million rounds of ammunition promised the previous year. At the same time, Kiev requested further concrete guarantees on Ukraine's future membership of NATO and EU structures.

On the war front, Ukrainian authorities reported that two Russian S-300 missiles hit a hotel in Kharkiv, wounding 11 people, including some journalists, overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory continue, with Moscow authorities declaring the shooting down of some of them in the Rostov, Tula, Voronezh and Kaluga regions.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced a 12-hour ceasefire along the road that inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency would have to travel to reach the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and replace their colleagues.
