The development of three 2 GW floating offshore wind farms in Italy is underway

The partnership further consolidates the commitment in the floating offshore wind industry thanks to three new plants under development located approximately 30 km off the coasts of Lazio and Sardinia

With this agreement, the consortium becomes one of the major operators in the sector in Italy with projects for a total capacity of approximately 3 GW and able to meet the electricity consumption of almost 2,5 million households

GreenIT, the Italian renewable energy joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and CDP Equity (CDP Group), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP – through its Flagship Funds), have signed an agreement for the development of three floating offshore wind farms in Lazio and Sardinia. The plants will be located about 30 km from the coast and have a total capacity of almost 2 GW.

The agreement provides for the development of a wind farm in Lazio, off the coast of Civitavecchia, for a total capacity of up to 540 MW and two other plants located off the coast of Olbia (Sardinia), with a power of approximately 500 MW and 1.000 MW . The three projects are expected to generate around 5 TWh/year and will be operational between 2028 and 2031, once the authorization process and the subsequent construction phase have been completed.

The entire Italian offshore wind portfolio of the partnership will reach a capacity of almost 3 GW with an annual production of approximately 7 TWh of renewable energy, capable of satisfying the electricity consumption of almost 2,51 million households, thus contributing to the decarbonisation objectives of the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030.

The three offshore wind farms will use floating foundations and innovative technical solutions aimed at minimizing the environmental and visual impact and will benefit from technological and logistical synergies with the other offshore wind initiatives managed within the same partnership.

The plants will be developed by a joint work team supported by Copenhagen Offshore Partners, exclusive supplier of CIP for the implementation of offshore wind power, and by NiceTechnology and 7 Seas Wind Power, Italian companies with proven experience in the offshore sector, which have already collaborated with GreenIT and CIP in the development of two other projects in Sicily and Sardinia.

This new agreement represents a further strategic step and a clear commitment to strengthen the floating offshore wind sector in Italy, providing a significant contribution towards a low-carbon future and encouraging the growth of the local production chain.

DEEPENING

Green IT

GreenIT is the joint venture owned 51% by Plenitude (Eni) and 49% by CDP Equity, set up to develop, build and manage plants for the production of energy from renewable sources in Italy. Created in 2021, the joint venture is part of the strategy aimed at supporting the country's energy transition, increasing the generation of renewable energy, in line with the objectives set by the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners

Formed in 2012, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners P/S (CIP) is today the largest fund manager dedicated to greenfield investments in renewable energy and a global leader in offshore wind. Funds managed by CIP focus on investments in offshore and onshore wind, solar PV, biomass and waste energy, as well as transmission and distribution, spare capacity, storage, advanced bioenergy and Power -to-X. CIP administers ten funds and currently boasts assets under management of around 19 billion euros for investments in the energy sector and associated infrastructures, entrusted to it by over 135 international institutional investors. Now CIP intends to accelerate its role in the global energy transition and aims to manage €100 billion of investments in green energy by 2030. For more information about CIP, visit www.cip.dk.
