The introduction of hydrocarbons into the Coral Sul FLNG, in the Mozambican waters, has started

Eni, as Area 4 Upstream Delegated Operator on behalf of the partners ExxonMobil, CNPC, GALP, KOGAS and ENH, announces that the introduction of hydrocarbons in Coral Sul, the natural gas plant, has been safely started Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) from the Coral South field, off the coast of Mozambique.

With the injecting of gas into the plant, Coral Sul FLNG is preparing to produce the first shipment of LNG in the second half of 2022, thus adding Mozambique to the LNG producing countries.

The introduction of hydrocarbons takes place after the timely completion of the offshore commissioning activities. The FLNG arrived at the operational site off the coast of Mozambique in early January 2022; mooring and connection to six submarine production wells were finalized in March and May 2022 respectively.

The Coral South project reached its final investment decision in 2017; the manufacturing and construction activities of the FLNG plant began in September 2018 (with the cutting of the first steel plate for the hull) and were completed as scheduled in 38 months, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Coral Sul FLNG left South Korea for Mozambique in November 2021; While construction was underway in Korea, several significant activities were undertaken in Mozambique with the support of local authorities, including the ultra-deep water (2.000m) drilling and completion campaign involving the highest skills and equipment technological and operational.

Coral-Sul FLNG has been implemented with an approach based on energy optimization, based on a systematic analysis of efficiency. Features include, among other things, zero flaring during normal operations, the use of thermally efficient aeroderivative gas turbines for the compression of refrigerants and the generation of electricity, the use of Dry Low NOx technology to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and waste heat recovery systems for the process.

The Coral Sul FLNG

Coral Sul FLNG is 432 meters long, 66 meters wide, weighs around 220.000 tons and can accommodate up to 350 people in its eight-story housing module. The plant is located at a water depth of approximately 2.000 meters and is held in position by 20 mooring lines for a total weight of 9.000 tons.

Coral Sul FLNG has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3,4 million tons per year (MTPA) and will produce 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the gigantic Coral field, located in the Rovuma basin. Coral-Sul FLNG is the first floating LNG plant ever installed in the deep waters of the African continent.

Eni

Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006. Between 2011 and 2014 the company discovered supergiant natural gas resources in the Rovuma basin, in the Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha fields, with total volumes of gas estimated at 2.400 billion cubic meters. . Eni also holds exploration rights in the A5-B, Z5-C and Z5-D offshore blocks in the Angoche and Zambezi basins.

Area 4

Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture SpA (MRV), a joint venture set up by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% stake in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. In addition to MRV, Galp, KOGAS and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos EP each hold 10% stakes in Area 4. Eni is the offshore Delegated Operator and leads the construction and operation of the floating liquefied natural gas plant on behalf of MRV.
