Though proclaimed the liberation of the city, small groups of Islamic militiamen are still in Benghazi from which they try to escape and are engaged in firefights with the forces of General Khalifa Haftar. Yesterday Libyan soldiers occupied new positions around the Baladi hotel in the city where there are still handfuls of Islamic militiamen. At the moment Haftar's forces control 98% of the al Jarid market, while in these days six soldiers have died and others have been injured by the mines in the area placed by the militiamen fleeing to hinder the advance of the Haftar army that among other things, he announced the "total liberation" of Benghazi last Wednesday.
Backed lavishly by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, Haftar has gone to great lengths to hinder
the application of the peace agreement between the Libyan factions signed under the aegis of the UN in Skhirat, in
Morocco: an agreement that in his eyes has the original sin of limiting its power. Then he launched
several military offensives, conquering the so-called “Oil Crescent” in the autumn of 2016, the lung
economy of the country. Meanwhile, an agreement seems to have been reached between the head of the Libyan parliament, Abdullah al Masry, and the mayor of Benghazi, Abdel Rahman al Abar, for the creation of a working group to organize the transfer of the seat of the House of Representatives from Tobruk to the capital of the
Cyrenaica. The reaching of the agreement was announced on 11 July, during a press conference
organized in Benghazi, the city symbol of the anti-Gaddafi revolution which has now become the general's power center
Haftar.
