Brenner, joint letter from Ministers De Micheli and Scheuer to European Commissioner Valean: "EU intervenes against the unilateral prohibitions of the Tyrol"

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Paola De Micheli and her German counterpart Adreas Scheuer have sent a joint letter to the European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean to denounce the introduction of further unilateral bans on the transit of heavy vehicles since January XNUMXst, along the Tyrolean section of the European Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor. Prohibitions that are defined as "inappropriate and unacceptable" and apply to all international transport with the exception of those that originate or destination in certain areas of the Austrian territory.

In the letter, the two Ministers draw the attention of the European Commission to the effects that the additional measures adopted by Tyrol have on the functioning of the single market, in terms of obstacles to the free movement of goods and distortion of competition, with negative consequences for companies in the sector and in general for the continental economy, moreover in the context of the economic-health emergency of the pandemic.

According to Italy and Germany the environmental reasons of Austria do not appear convincing and it is highlighted that the measures in question are not the result of a coordinated and shared approach with the other countries of the Alpine area, but rather aim at diverting traffic to rubber to neighboring countries and regions.

The letter reminds us of Italy's commitment to pursuing climate objectives, limiting emissions and developing road-rail intermodality, as demonstrated by the numerous legislative measures already adopted, the works included in the Recovery Plan, and the state of progress, on schedule on the Italian section, of the works for the construction of the Brenner base railway tunnel.

Ministers De Micheli and Scheuer concluded by asking the Commission to intervene urgently, as guardian of the European Treaties, by adopting all the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the rules and principles mentioned.
