Canary, Klebsiella superbug warning. 13 tourists hit

13 tourists, Swedish and Norwegian, were affected between January and April. This was revealed by the European Center for Disease Control (Ecdc) on its website. According to experts there is a high risk of this bacterium spreading in Europe if the necessary preventive health measures are not taken.

We are talking about Klebsiella pneumoniae St392, a bacterium that is very resistant to antibiotics that is usually contracted during hospital admissions. The analyzes showed that the bacterium was contracted within the same health facility on the Canary Island.

According to experts, if the subjects carrying the bacterium are hospitalized in their hospitals in their countries of origin, the risk of further transmission is very high, especially if measures to prevent and control infections are not implemented in good time.

Klebsiella pneumoniae St392, which produces Oxa 48 enzymes, is a multidrug-resistant bacterium that is contracted "typically in the health sector", for this reason the report of the Ecdc experts suggests to the hospitals of the EU countries "to consider, when admitting a patient , the detailed chronology of all the trips made in the last period and if there was a hospitalization in a facility at risk ".

All those who have been transferred directly or have been admitted to a foreign country in the 12 months prior to admission to the country of origin must be checked for this bacterium.

In Mexico, at least nine newborns could have died from a bacterium of the genus klebsiella in the past few weeks. The deaths occurred between the end of June and the beginning of July in the neonatal special therapy unit, which hosts 400 newborns monthly, and for the moment the medical reports only specify that it was a bacterium resistant to all antibiotics .
