In Lecce presentation of the MILIA Project with Capo Dap

Prisoners at work, to renovate the furnishings of Italian prisons. 185 people – 110 inmates in the Lecce prison and 75 in the Sulmona prison – will start producing wooden cabinets, tables, chairs and stools, for all 190 institutes throughout the country. It is the MILIA Project - Experimental Models of Intervention for the work and active inclusion of people serving sentences, financed through the 2014-2020 Inclusion Pon and aimed at recovering and strengthening the skills of inmates and acquiring the required professionalism from the job market.

Production will begin in January 2023, after an initial phase of adaptation of the systems and carpentry shops and after adequate professional training. In Lecce, 45 prisoners – selected from among those with less than 5 years of sentence – after interviews with the operators of the local Employment Centre, are carrying out theoretical training activities, which will be followed by practical training within the carpentry shop. In Sulmona, on the other hand, the five training courses, each for 16 prisoners, are in their final stages: exams for the achievement of qualification certificates will take place next December, which will be followed by internship activities.

The project will be illustrated tomorrow, Thursday 24 November, at 9:30, in the Lecce prison, where the MILIA Project Steering Committee meets to take stock of the progress of the programme. Also planned is a visit to the institute's carpentry shop and to the overnight room specially set up with the prototypes of furniture already made.
