Coral-Sul FLNG ready to sail for the Rovuma basin, Mozambique, in the first development of Area 4

Eni, as Delegated Operator and on behalf of the Area 4 partners (ExxonMobil, CNPC, GALP, KOGAS and ENH) today held the naming ceremony of Coral Sul FLNG, the first floating LNG plant that will sail towards the deep waters of the continent of Africa. The event took place at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, in the presence of SE Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique, and SE Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea.

The FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas), which is part of the Coral South project, will now be towed and anchored in the Rovuma basin, off the coast of Mozambique. The start of production is expected in the second half of 2022 and will help increase the availability of gas in a highly competitive market context.

The Coral South project investment was approved in 2017, just 36 months after the last exploration well. The construction activities of the FLNG began in 2018 and were completed on time and cost, despite the pandemic. In parallel with the construction activities in Korea, several activities were undertaken in Mozambique, with the full support of the local authorities, including the ultra-deep water drilling and completion campaign (2000m wd) involving the highest skills and equipment technological and operational.

The Coral South project will generate significant revenues for the country, and will create more than 800 new jobs during the operational period.

Stefano Maione, Eni's Development, Operations and Energy Efficiency Director, declared: “Coral Sul FLNG is an engineering company of the highest level for the know-how and construction technologies used. It is in line with the start of the development of Mozambican gas resources, also of the highest quality. The project is fully part of Eni's energy transition strategy, and the path towards a decarbonised energy future, in which gas plays an essential transition role ".

Coral-Sul FLNG has implemented an integrated approach to energy optimization, based on a systematic analysis of energy efficiency. These include, inter alia, zero flaring during normal operations, the use of thermally efficient aeroderivative gas turbines for refrigerant compression and electricity generation, the use of Dry Low NOx technology to reduce oxide emissions. of nitrogen and waste heat recovery systems for the process.

The Coral-Sul FLNG

Coral Sul FLNG is 432 meters long, 66 meters wide, weighs approximately 220.000 tons and can accommodate up to 350 people in its eight-story Living Quarter module. When the FLNG arrives in Mozambique waters, the installation campaign will start, which involves mooring and connection operations at a water depth of about 2.000 meters through 20 mooring lines for a total weight of 9.000 tons.

The Coral Sul FLNG treatment plant has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3,4 million tons per year (MTPA) and will produce 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the gigantic Coral field, located in the basin of the Rovuma.

Eni in Mozambique

Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006. Between 2011 and 2014, in the Rovuma basin, the company discovered supergiant natural gas resources, in the Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha fields, with an estimated total quantity of 2.400 billion meters. cubes of gas. Eni also holds the exploration rights of the A5-B, Z5-C and Z5-D offshore blocks in the Angoche and Zambezi basins.

Area 4

Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture SpA (MRV), a joint venture set up by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% stake in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. In addition to MRV, Galp, KOGAS and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos EP each hold 10% stakes in Area 4. Eni is the offshore Delegated Operator and is leading the construction and operation of the floating liquefied natural gas plant on behalf of MRV.
