Credendino: "Provocative and aggressive Russians in the Mediterranean"

On the sidelines of the works of the Mare Global Forum in Genoa, the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral of the team Enrico Credendino raised the alarm about the presence of the Russian military fleet in the Mediterranean:”The Russians in the Mediterranean have a provocative attitude that has never been seen in the past. It was normal in the Baltic Sea, but it wasn't here. Today, however, the Russians are also very aggressive, with hostile attitudes and this can be the cause of an accident. An accident between two military ships of two opposing countries does not know where it can lead. The Mediterranean is today in an unstable equilibrium due to many crisis factors, from irregular immigration to possible terrorism, illicit phenomena of various kinds, a great naval rearmament of the countries on the southern shore. Then there is the Russian fleet, and this is the immediate consequence of the war in Ukraine for our security: the presence of the Russian fleet that was not there. We have had up to 18 Russian ships in the Mediterranean, this does not pose a direct threat to our territory, but it certainly increases the tension".

The Mediterranean is an area left by the Americans under the Obama era. Today it is a crossroads that stimulates Chinese interests increasingly present in Africa. In such an unstable framework, the safety of maritime traffic becomes decisive for the industrial development of the Bel Paese but also of the EU more generally. Not to mention the security of pipelines and submarine cables for the internet.

Credendino summarized an emergency that should not be underestimated as follows: “The Mediterranean is an unstable geopolitical area where the Navy is required to have a much greater presence than in the past. Until 15 -20 years ago the Americans guaranteed stability, then with the advent of the Obama administration they shifted their focus to the Indo-Pacific effectively leaving a void in the Mediterranean".

Therefore, the creation of a credible European Defense that deploys a Community military fleet in the waters of the Mediterranean to protect the interests of its citizens is becoming more and more topical.
