Descalzi meets the Algerian Minister Mohamed Arkab and the CEO of SONATRACH Rachid Hachichi

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met today in Algiers with the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the new CEO of SONATRACH, Rachid Hachichi, to discuss gas production and export, investments in the country and energy transition initiatives.

Eni and SONATRACH shared joint programs for the development of gas production operated by Eni, as well as the export of gas and LNG to Europe.

Descalzi also updated the Minister on the progress of the memoranda of intent (MoI) signed by Eni and SONATRACH last January. The MoI on decarbonization of upstream processes has prompted several activities, including the detection of gas leaks in pipelines and plants, and the identification of flaring-down opportunities in SONATRACH fields. As part of the existing cooperation, the parties also discussed other energy transition initiatives, including renewable energy, hydrogen and the electricity interconnector between Algeria and Europe.

Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981. With an equity production of approximately 130.000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023, Eni is the most important international company operating in the country.
