Last night, the Army blasters from the Regio Genio Ferrovieri of Castel Maggiore (Bo) and the divers from the Submarine Operating Group of the Submarine and Incursive Command (COMSUBIN) of the Navy have neutralized and removed, with a very delicate and particular intervention difficulty, a WWII war bomb found during work in progress on the waterfront Saxony in Fano.
The bomb was found in the evening in an open construction site for the extension work of the seafarers and was accidentally triggered during the excavations. The army bombers in coordination with the divers from the Submarine Operating Group of the Navy's COMSUBIN, have identified and recognized the bomb, which is a bomb from the UK MK6 by 500 pounds. The particular triggering device provides for a delay of armament included between the 6 and the 144 hours and, for this reason, the remediation intervention represented a serious danger for the nearby hospital of Fano impossible to completely evacuate.
The Prefecture of Pesaro and Urbino has arranged and coordinated the emergency reclamation intervention that has provided a radius of horizontal clearance of 1.816 meters, of 1.392 meters as regards the vertical and of 2.500 meters for the water mirror in front of the place of tempering. These safety criteria have imposed the blockade of the Adriatic Railway and of evacuating about 23.000 people through the coordination of the police forces supported by personnel of the 28 regiment of the Italian Army. However, since the local hospital could not be cleared, the reclamation intervention was declared of the utmost urgency in order to protect the health of the patients and staff of the health facility.
After a long, meticulous and exhausting night activity, the Army's artificiers carried out the harnessing of the device, the dangerous removal and the subsequent delivery to the personnel of the Navy who proceeded to transport far from the coast in the open sea, at a distance of safety from any installation or naval route. There, the divers of the Navy will wait for the 144 hours foreseen by the piric delay of construction of the device before proceeding to its destruction. This intervention will obviously be carried out by implementing all the consolidated techniques and measures aimed at preserving the marine ecosystem.
