Eni announces the start of a collaboration with Holcim for the development of an innovative technology for the use of CO2

Eni announces the start of a collaboration with Holcim aimed at developing an innovative technology for the use of CO2 in a logic of circularity and decarbonisation. The technology developed by Eni is based on the carbonation of minerals based on magnesium silicates and the process is capable of producing a material in which the CO2 is fixed in a stable and permanent way and which can be used in the formulation of cements.

The collaboration is part of Eni's decarbonisation strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in which research and innovation represent a fundamental lever. Continuous innovation is the basis of the organic growth of the company, since it allows to consolidate the know-how and to enrich it, contributing to the training of the skills of our people and to technological evolution.

The partnership involves the construction of a demonstration plant with the aim of testing the reduction of the carbon footprint of cements and the integration of this innovative solution in cement factories.

Monica Spada, Eni's Head of Research & Technological Innovation, commented: "Innovation and technological development are the strategic key to successfully face the challenge of the energy transition, which is why we are delighted with this collaboration that will leverage Eni's R&D skills. and the Holcim experience. This technology allows us to accelerate our path towards decarbonisation, providing an adequate solution for sectors with emissions that are technologically difficult to reduce ”.

Edelio Bermejo, Head of Holcim's Innovation Center, said: “Achieving zero net emissions in cement production will require.
