Eni reaches a new milestone in digital transformation thanks to the advanced dynamic reservoir simulation

The digitalisation process of the company continues with other important results

Eni announces the industrial application of ECHELON, an advanced dynamic reservoir simulator for the optimization of monitoring, development and production of oil and gas fields. The ECHELON software allows to conduct thousands of simulations of reservoir in parallel in extremely short times, allowing to further speed up the time-to-market. This technology will support Eni in the management of interpretative uncertainty by improving the understanding of the behavior of the reservoirs acting in support of corporate decisions and, together with the recent enhancement of the supercomputing infrastructure with the creation of HPC5, which from the beginning 2020 will make Eni available to Eni total peak power equal to 70 Petaflops, confirms the progress of the company digitization process.

As part of the digital transformation program, Eni has signed a strategic agreement in 2018 with Stone Ridge Technology (SRT) for the joint development and industrialization of ECHELON, the first dynamic reservoir simulator designed and developed to utilize the maximum potential of the high-performance general-purpose computing technology on graphics processing units (GP-GPUs). ECHELON, able to take full advantage of the GP-GPUs computing power, has reduced 5 processing times times compared to other commercial reservoir simulators, guaranteeing the same accuracy.

Eni will continue to apply ECHELON on strategic corporate assets during the 2020 and, in collaboration with SRT, has planned the industrial-level launch of the compositional simulator in the second quarter of the 2020.
