Eni selects the best startups to develop innovative solutions in the field of "Communications Data Mining"

Eni, in collaboration with Cariplo Factory, announced the winners of the “Communications Data Mining” startup call, the open innovation initiative aimed at data analytics with the aim of monitoring and optimizing communication processes and interactions with stakeholders. Of the 8 startups involved in the Selection Day, 3 realities were selected: BLACKBIRD.AI, DATRIX and ASC27 for having developed the proposals with the highest innovative potential.

These startups will start an in-depth process with Eni to identify possible areas of cooperation, reserving the possibility of activating a future collaboration. The teams of innovators will be able to interact with Eni and, with the support of Cariplo Factory, test the innovative potential of their products and services in a sector of great importance and in constant change such as Communications.

Focus on the startups that have been selected:

  • Area Criticalities Detection, the chosen company is BLACKBIRD.AI, a Californian startup founded in 2017 able to distinguish fake news and digital disinformation campaigns, concerning brands and organizations.
  • SDGs intelligence area the chosen company is DATRIX, a Milanese startup born in 2018, develops software solutions and sustainable services of augmented analytics and machine learning.
  • Area Automated Dataviz, the company chosen is ASC27, develops a series of solutions based on artificial intelligence and cyber security.

The Selection Day is the result of a project process that began in July with the involvement of Eni's external Communication and Digital & Information Technology units and the definition of the areas of innovation with the related objectives. 74 innovative startups and SMEs that were analyzed in view of the final selection.

The research has focused on three areas of interest:

  • Criticalities Detection: monitoring anomalous and critical events in the industrial sector, with particular reference to the phenomenon of fake news; promptly grasp the "weak signals" in order to set up anticipatory countermeasures; integrate alerting systems for anomaly or event detection with media monitoring systems.
  • 2. SDGs intelligence: monitor corporate reputation, analyze Big Data from the web to stay constantly updated in real-time with current trends; communicate and engage with stakeholders in order to improve understanding of the company's reputation perception.
  • 3. Automated Dataviz: representing data, from technicality to communication, an increasingly relevant activity for both communicators and audiences; create generative algorithms capable of closing the gap between communicated and perceived.

With this project, Eni takes a further step in the digital transformation process, contributing to the development of a virtuous ecosystem with startups in the name of innovation, a fundamental lever for achieving the strategic objectives of the company.

Cariplo Factory is one of the main open innovation players that since 2018 has supported Eni in enhancing the Italian ecosystem and the role of startups in the digital transformation of the country.
