Nato exercises in Portugal with underwater drones and other "unmanned" technologies

In Portugal – Troia Island – two NATO exercises focused on the integration of new maritime technologies into operations and the ability of autonomous underwater vehicles to operate together.

The first exercise is the Dynamic Messenger 23 (September 18-29) which focuses on the integration of unmanned maritime systems into naval operations. The operation involves more than 2.000 civilian and military personnel both on land and on board ships and involves fourteen Alliance countries. The exercise is conducted jointly byAllied Command Transformation of NATO in the United States and fromAllied Maritime Command of NATO in Northwood, UK.

The second exercise is the REPMUS 23 - Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems – which took place in the same region from 11 to 22 September and focused on capacity building and interoperability. REPMUS was led by the host nation, Portugal, with NATO as the main actor. The exercise was organized by the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Testing (CMRE), the Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LSTS) at the University of Porto and the Maritime Unmanned Systems Initiative (MUSI) of NATO. Fifteen NATO countries participated in the exercise.

Both REPMUS 23 and DYNAMIC MESSENGER 23 have developed significant partnerships between the private sector and academia and provide guidance for future technological advances, operational concepts, doctrine and work programs.
