Europe: the choice of the President of the Eurogroup complicated

It is still up to who will be the next president of the Eurogroup. The deadline for submitting the candidatures closes this weekend and by Monday afternoon, finance ministers will meet in Brussels to decide.

Competing for the position in question, even if formally not yet candidates, are Pier Carlo Padoan, the French Bruno Le Maire, the Portuguese Mario Centeno, the Austrian Joerg Schelling, the Luxembourgish Pierre Gramegna.

The choice will be complicated. First of all because the three top European offices are covered by exponents of the popular party and, on this occasion, the socialist party claims the post, on the other hand the hypothesis of favoring the Minister of the Economy Padoan would be in contrast the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the president of the ECB, Mario Draghi, are Italians. The absence of a new German government could therefore complicate and delay the choice.
