The UN special envoy for Libya Ghassam Salame wants to organize a reconciliation assembly in a neutral place on the Libyan territory in order to prepare for the next elections scheduled for the spring of 2019.
The choice of the place is crucial to avoid conflicts and denials to participate by all the actors in the field. The localities of Tripoli, Tobruk and Bengasi should be discarded in favor of a place in the desert, yet to be established.
Another novelty will make the assembly more captivating. The will of Sait al Isiam, son of Muammar Gaddafi, to participate in the important meeting in January. The message, reported by Corriere della Sera, is clear: “I am not dead, as someone falsely asserts. Nor do I withdraw into hiding and escape. Far from it. We Gaddafi have been unjustly ousted by the military intervention of NATO and by illegal forces, which we would have easily beaten had it not been for the foreign raids. But I know that most of the Libyans have not forgotten us. Indeed, if the first years following 2011, especially after the expectations created by the 2012 elections, were not particularly favorable to us, now the situation has radically changed. Today I feel that a large part of the country is with us and remembers with nostalgia the order and the reforms, especially of the first decade of the new millennium ”. The Corriere della Sera met in Rome with the team of his political advisors and officers of the old regime. The group is trying to regain the necessary contacts in Italy with the hope of receiving help and is moving to the UN and the EU.
