Foibe, Sangiuliano: "The Museum of Remembrance will be born, don't forget the tragic massacre of the Italians"

The bill was approved in the Council of Ministers, the president of Lazio Rocca: “A symbolic place to bring out from oblivion all the 'memories' erased by history”.

The Council of Ministers, upon proposal of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, approved, in today's meeting, the bill establishing the "Museum of Remembrance” in Rome with the aim of preserving and renewing the memory of the tragedy of the Italians and of all the victims of the foibe, of the exodus of the Istrians, Fiumes and Dalmatians from their lands after the Second World War, of reconstructing and narrating the history of the Italians of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia and the more complex story of the eastern Italian border.

For the creation and management of the museum, a Foundation will be established, established by the Ministry of Culture and the Lazio Region, in which other public and private entities will also be able to participate.

The overall allocation for the purposes of establishing and setting up the "Museum of Memory" is 8 million euros for the three-year period 2024-2026.

"The creation of the Museum is a historical duty towards the Istrian, Fiume and Dalmatian exiles who suffered under Tito's communist dictatorship. These tragedies must not be forgotten. They are an important part of Italian history and must be known and understood by new generations – declared Minister Sangiuliano, at the end of the Council of Ministers – I thank the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, for wanting to promote the Museum in which various entities will participate, starting from the Lazio Region which, thanks to the commitment of President Francesco Rocca, will make the property available for the Museum and contribute to the design and management".

"Today the government gave the green light to a text to create the Museum of Remembrance. Rome, the capital of Italy, and Lazio, thus become custodians and promoters of a necessary collective and national memory. The horrors generated by the totalitarianism of the 900th century must become concrete and current witnesses among our young generations and, above all, among those of the future. We have, therefore, developed this ambitious project with the MiC, thanks to the synergy with Minister Sangiuliano, who will soon see the rise, in Rome, of a symbolic place not only of the drama experienced by our compatriots on the eastern border throughout the XNUMXs , but it will host and bring out from oblivion all the 'memories' erased by history. It is a moral duty in which the Region firmly believes”, stated the President of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca.
