Once again, the South is the area in which young people aged between 18 and 24 with at most the middle school leave both study and vocational training. If, in fact, on average in Italy these young people are just under 14%, in the South they reach 18,5%, while in the North they stop at 11,3% and in the Center at 10,7%. And it is more males than females who interrupt their studies: southern boys are 21,5%, southern girls 15,2%. These are SVIMEZ elaborations on ISTAT data presented today in Rome during the seminar on “The educational system in the Italy of dualisms. A discussion starting from the "Education & Training Monitor 2017", organized by SVIMEZ and the Representation of the European Commission in Italy.

Daria Ciriaci, the Representation of the European Commission in Italy, Francesco Avvisati of the OECD and Gaetano Vecchione, of the University of Naples, attended the seminar, coordinated by Luca Bianchi, Director of SVIMEZ. The following debate was attended by Adriano Giannola, President of SVIMEZ, Francesco Sinopoli, Secretary of the FLC-CGIL and Roberto Torrini, of the Bank of Italy, former Director of ANVUR.

From the analysis and comparison the deep territorial differences have emerged, and above all, as in some provinces, in particular southern, almost one young person every four years abandoning school or vocational training. This leads to a too low level of skills in the South, which makes access to the labor market even more difficult.
