G7 in Canada, debut with great fanfare for Giuseppe Conte

Giuseppe Conte will be attending the G7 in Canada on Friday. The first official release of the new president of the council where he will meet world leaders to discuss hot dossiers such as the US tariff issue and Iran's nuclear deal. During the works Giuseppe Conte will perform several bilateral meetings with Angela Merkel and Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, Angela May and Justin Trudeau.

Giuseppe Conte will immediately meet the president of the EU Commission Jean Claude Juncker. And with his European colleagues he will have the opportunity to open the discussion in view of the Council "on the future of the EU" at the end of June: crucial issues such as immigration on the agenda, only yesterday the "no" of the new government to the proposal revision of the Dublin regulation.

Conte, today, in front of the press that pressed him on the important summit, explained: the G7 will be "the first opportunity to speak out for the interests of Italian citizens" and "Italy's first position will be to make itself known, the second to become respect ". On the international scene, Conte presents himself with the label of Prime Minister of a Euro-skeptical and “populist” government. But also with some fixed points, punctuated in the speech for trust: no goal of leaving the Euro, the "convinced belonging" to NATO, the "privileged" alliance with the United States and an "opening" to Russia, with the proposal for "revision of the system of sanctions". However, the Italian premier has not yet had the opportunity to comment on individual dossiers. How will you comment on US tariffs on steel and aluminum? Italy has so far sided firmly with the EU for the no to protectionism, on the basis of the belief that it damages economies like the Italian one. Merkel also stated on the eve: “I don't think there will be a dramatic problem at the G7 in the European position, even if for the first time there is Conte”. On tariffs, as on the climate, after Trump's halt to the Paris agreement, it is very difficult for the big seven to reach a common position. The US is light years away from France, Germany, England, Japan, Canada and, on paper, Italy. While on the issues that Justin Trudeau has placed at the center of the Canadian presidency, from the future of work, to gender equality, to safeguarding the oceans, a much more homogeneous line is expected. At the table, diplomatic sources note, almost all elected leaders with political forces that have centered on inclusive growth and the will to respond to the inequalities created by globalization.
