Silvio Berlusconi: new elections would be a "bad sign", the PD must support the new government

Silvio Berlusconi, president of Forza Italia, in an interview with "La Stampa", speaking of the possible scenarios relating to the next government, stated that "The Italians have decided to give a majority to the center-right, but also not to assign to any party or coalition the strength to rule alone. This means two things: that the center-right has the right but above all the duty to lead the next government, and that no one, among those who have obtained an important consensus from the voters, can think of not taking charge of the need for the country to be governed. I believe that responsibility means acknowledging the fact that Salvini is the leader of the most voted party within the most voted coalition. It also means the awareness of the fact that new elections would be at the same time a bad signal for democracy and a probably not decisive path. Better, much better to lose a few weeks for a good government, if possible, than months in a new electoral campaign ”.

Berlusconi, in his speech then excluded a possible government resulting from an agreement between the Lega and the 5 Star Movement: “I absolutely exclude it. I trust Salvini on the level of loyalty and on that of political intelligence. I don't see how a force in our coalition can imagine collaborating in government with the Five Stars. I exclude that the League can make a choice so in contrast with its own voters ”.

Berlusconi went on to comment on a possible new electoral law: “with these parliamentary numbers and with this situation in the country, to make a better electoral law. I want to be even more explicit: I do not consider an electoral law better that hands the government of the country to a minority, whatever it is. The vote made it clear that today there is no political majority among the voters. It cannot be the electoral law to create it, unless it still wants to aggravate the gap between the citizens and the ruling class of the country ”.

With regard to the offices of the Chamber and Senate and how to identify the names of their presidents, Silvio Berlusconi said that “the electoral result does not allow for any automatism. The presidencies of the two chambers, especially in a complex situation like this, must be figures of high institutional profile and guarantee for all. The question cannot be reduced to boxes to be filled in as part of an overall political balance. Naturally Forza Italia is able to express figures perfectly suited to these roles. The issue is not to put us a candidacy: the center-right will have to make an overall reflection internally, and to jointly propose a high-level solution ”.

The president of FI then concluded by talking about the future and the role of his party: “our future is simply called Forza Italia. Ours is a great liberal party, so all opinions are legitimate. However, precisely because we are a great liberal force, an integral part of the large EPP family, our future remains quite distinct from that of the Northern League who are certainly loyal allies, but who have a different history from ours, a different language from ours, values different from ours ".
