Jerusalem capital of Israel, for Abu Mazen "unacceptable"

A decisive disappointment came from Palestine to the news that President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Palestinian President Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) today warned the United States against recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as it could destroy fledgling White House peace efforts in the Middle East area.

According to the Wafa news agency, Abu Mazen said that the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or the transfer of the US embassy to Jerusalem "would pose a threat to the future of the peace process and is unacceptable". US officials have said that President Donald Trump could recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital as early as this week while he would postpone the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, despite the opposition of the international community. For their part, the Palestinians consider their capital East Jerusalem, the historical core of the city occupied militarily by Israel in the 1967.
