Hong Kong: Donald Trump calls for a meeting with Xi Jinping

Protests continue in Hong Kong. According to the news agencies present in the city, thousands of Chinese military police men marched in a stadium in Shenzhen, raising the fear of military intervention.

Meanwhile, the situation at the international airport has returned to normal thanks to a temporary injunction that prevents protesters from occupying some areas of the airport, only passengers with regular boarding documents can enter the airport.

Concern was expressed by Donald Trump who asked to meet as soon as possible his counterpart Xi Jinping who wrote on Twitter: “I know Chinese President Xi very well. He is a great leader who has great respect for his people. He is also a good man in difficult situations. I have no doubt that if he wants to solve the Hong Kong problem quickly and humanely, he can do it ”.

In recent days, at the news of the concentration of Chinese soldiers on the border with the former British colony, the US had expressed strong concern and although condemning the violence in the protests, strongly urged the two parties to dialogue to find a solution to the crisis that days turned the city of Hong Kong into a battlefield.

The popular protests began in early June in opposition to a bill that would have allowed the extradition of people from Hong Kong to be tried in mainland China with the fear that such legislation could be used with repressive intent, eroding civil rights and essentially the same Hong Kong special regime.

The protest saw the participation of millions of citizens who, taking to the streets, paralyzed different areas of the city.

Despite the suspension of the bill the protesters were not satisfied and asked for their final withdrawal. After the discounts had with the police, other requests were added: the resignation of the chief executive Carrie Lam; the release of the arrested demonstrators (in total they are almost 700) and the fall of the accusations against them; an independent investigation into the work of the police and the withdrawal of the "riot" qualification with which the authorities have labeled the protest.
