Washington's no to Kiev on long-range missiles and F-16s. Moscow violates the Nuclear Treaty

Russia is ready to launch a massive attack before more than 100 new Western tanks arrive in late March. Therefore, it is urgent to remedy as soon as possible in order not to lose other territories. The Bakhmut area is at the center of the dispute in these hours. The US has therefore decided to send new long-range missiles, 150 km, capable of hitting Moscow's troops within the Ukrainian borders, thus distancing the front close to the Russian borders. The new two billion dollar package includes the Ground-launched small diameter bomb, these are rockets that can be easily used even without training and can be launched from Himars or similar systems. Built by Boeing and from Saab they are accurate, thanks to sophisticated guidance systems and can detonate above the target or in the ground. They also have electronic countermeasures to avoid being attacked and incapacitated by the enemy.

“The events on the ground will not change”, commented the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, but they will only aggravate the escalation.

Kiev, on the other hand, had asked for missiles Atacros, with a range of 300 km. Washington immediately vetoed them because they could cross the border and hit Russian territory. Same veto also on the request for F-16 fighter aircraft.

The Nuclear Treaty at risk

The United States accuses Russia of violating the new start, the nuclear weapons control treaty in force between the two countries.

Il New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty it had been negotiated by Obama and Medvedev, and had entered into force in 2011 to keep nuclear power under control. It stipulated that the two countries could not deploy more than 700 ICBMs, submarines and bombers capable of delivering atomic bombs (1.550 nuclear warheads mounted on these platforms and 800 launch systems).

In February 2021, the treaty was renewed but Covid blocked mutual inspections of arsenals.

Moscow then canceled a meeting of the bilateral commission for the application of the agreement, scheduled in Cairo last November because it was preparing to go to war by invading Ukraine.

The US State Department accused the Kremlin of violating the New Start the day before yesterday, adding that there is nothing to prevent Russian inspectors from coming to the United States to carry out their checks.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Rybakov he replied that the US did not want to consider Moscow's priorities, but only to discuss the resumption of inspections.

He then said that the situation in Ukraine also had an impact on the issue, thus officially declaring the violation, i.e. the suspension of the Nuclear Treaty since Putin threatens to use atomic weapons in Ukraine.
