Instability Africa: Even Gabon in the hands of the military junta. One more problem for Italy and the EU

(by Andrea Pinto) After Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, Guinea e Niger now also the Gabon joins the list of African states governed by self-proclaimed governments, following coups perpetrated by regular army soldiers. The president of Gabon Ali Bongo Ondimba he had won the political elections for the third time in a row, thus continuing the unusual family tradition that has ruled the country uninterruptedly for 56 years.

Gabon, which has always been under French influence, is a country very rich in raw materials such as uranium, oil, gold and precious woods and is a member of Opec. As the French mining group writes Repubblica Eramet which operates in Gabon in the manganese extraction sector had to stop its activities to secure its staff. Stop the condemnation of Paris: “We condemn the coup and recall our commitment to free and transparent elections".

Returning to Gabon, faced with the growing popular discontent with the conditions of extreme poverty despite the country's acclaimed riches, the Gabonese military, commanded by General Brice Oligui Nguema announced on national TV that they have canceled the election results and put an end to the Ali Bongo regime. The general then made himself president Interim to guide the transition.

The military closed the borders, decreed a curfew, dissolved parliament and ousted all institutions. However, they specified that they would honor all of Gabon's international commitments. General Brice Oligui Nguema, via the French newspaper Le Monde, said that Bongo "he is retired and enjoys all rights. But he is a Gabonese like all the others and he did not have the right to remain in office for a third term, the Constitution has been violated and the army has decided to assume its responsibilities".

The umpteenth coup in the space of a few years is a cause for serious concern on the part of theEcowas and African Union thus starting to lose their influence in almost the entire sub-Saharan region. The United States, the European Union and China continue to observe the evolution of the situation, while the doubts about a possible Russian interference in the wake of the coups d'état which have effectively set fire to all of central Africa are increasingly approaching.

Instability in Africa which inexorably has repercussions for Italy and the Old Continent as regards the uncontrolled flow of migrants which, according to some intelligence reports, could be used precisely by Russia to give substance to the much-vaunted hybrid war, thus destabilizing the Western countries from within due to the resurgent social and political intolerances.
