International Hannibal Classic of Monfalcone, the program of the seventh edition

From 8 to 10 September 2023 the Marina Monfalcone is preparing to host the seventh edition of the "International Hannibal Classic - Memorial Sergio Sorrentino" for vintage and classic sails. From this year the Metric Classes, which will race starting on Friday, will compete for the newborn “Classic Metre Race, CiviBank Trophy”. The event represents the third stage of the Adriatic AIVE Cup. Two seafaring conferences scheduled during the event, held respectively by the designer and shipwright Federico Lenardon and by Admiral Cristiano Bettini. Among the cups awarded the "Trophy of the two guidons".

INTERNATIONAL HANNIBAL CLASSIC, THE SEVENTH EDITION HAS STARTED

From 8 to 10 September 2023 at the Marina Monfalcone, organized by the Yacht Club Monfalcone (formerly Yacht Club Hannibal – www.yachtclubhannibal.it), chaired by Germano Scarpa with Loris Plet who together with the Board of Directors will race aboard the 1974 Hwyl, the seventh edition of the International Hannibal Classic - Memorial Sergio Sorrentino for vintage and classic sailboats will take place, also the third stage of the AIVE Cup of the Adriatic 2023.  

FROM THIS YEAR ALSO THE METRIC CLASSES

For the first time, starting this year, Friday 8 September will be dedicated to the Metric Classes (5.50 Meters SI, 6 Meters, 7 Meters, 8 Meters, etc.) which until Sunday, after three regattas, will compete for the “Classic Metre Race, CiviBank Trophy”. Margaux of 6 and Rieke of 1911 entered the SI 1919 Meters. Two regattas reserved for the other admitted classes: Vintage Yachts (launched until 1950), Classic Yachts (launched until 1975), Classic IOR (launched between 1970 and 1984), Open Classic (including Spirit of Tradition, with real-time classification), Yachts designed by Carlo Sciarrelli, Passere category and any other groupings, such as the Arpège category, if there are sufficient numbers to form a class. The Italian Navy will line up the 1972 sloop Sagittario and the 1858 auric cutter Sorella, the oldest regatta boat in the Mediterranean, on the starting line.

TROPHY OF THE TWO GUIDONS

The Monfalcone event, which also represents the first of the two appointments valid for the assignment of the Trofeo dei due Guidoni (the second is the City of Trieste Trophy, from 30 September to 1 October next, organized by the Yacht Club Adriaco), is supported by the Marina Monfalcone, the Municipality of Monfalcone, CIVIBANK, the W-eye wooden eyewear company from Udine, Armare Ropes, a manufacturer of technical nautical ropes and GTS-Sports, an Austrian sportswear brand. The International Hannibal Classic is sponsored by the FIV (Italian Sailing Federation), by the CIM (Comité International de la Méditerranée) and by the AIVE (Italian Vintage Sailing Association), also responsible for the tonnage of the boats.

THE CONFERENCES OF MARINERY: THE MASTER OF AX AND THE ADMIRAL

There will be two seafaring culture conferences organized at the Yacht Club Monfalcone. The first, entitled "International rule early boats", scheduled for Friday 8 September at 18:30, will be held by Federico Lenardon, while the second, which will take place on Saturday 9 September at 18:30, will see Admiral Cristiano Bettini present "Classic sailing hulls - Design for sailors" (ETS Editions), his latest literary work. Federico Lenardon is a designer and Shipwright of the Alto Adriatico Custom Shipyard, already the only student admitted to the table of the well-known Trieste yacht designer Carlo Sciarrelli. He has worked on the restoration of countless vessels, including the 6-metre International Tonnage Onkel Adolph of 1907 and Margaux of 1911, the 7-metre International Tonnage Hiawatha of 1910, the 17-metre ketch San Nicolò of 1925, the passenger transport Poto of 1925 and Galeb from 1936. He is the author of projects such as the dinghies Amelia and Feather 14', the 6,20-metre daysailer Barcolana 50, built on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the most attended regatta in the world and more recently of Nababbo IV, a new classic cutter in 10-metre-long timber under construction at Alto Adriatico Custom which will begin sailing in 2024. During his career, Team Admiral (r) Cristiano Bettini has instead been Commander of the Grecale frigate, the destroyer Ardito, the yawl Corsaro II, with who made two Atlantic crossings, up to holding the position of Commander of the Naval Academy of Livorno and that of Deputy Chief of Defense Staff. Among the books already published by the Admiral “Beyond the ocean river. Roman men and ships in the conquest of Britain” and the three volumes of “How sailing ships were designed”.

VII INTERNATIONAL HANNIBAL CLASSIC – THE 2023 PROGRAM

The event continues to be named after the sailor Sergio Sorrentino (1924-2017), world champion in the Dragon class in 1958 in Sweden, winner of three European Championships (1953, 1956 and 1964), former Olympian and founder of Marina Hannibal. Right here was born the "Tito Nordio", the first school of the Italian Sailing Federation.

  • 10.00 - 13.00 and 14.00 -18.00: Finalization of registrations at the Regatta Secretariat.
  • 10.30 am: Briefing for Metric Classes in the covered area of ​​the Yacht Club Monfalcone
  • 12.00: Warning signal first stage "Classic Metre Race".
  • 18.30: Conference by Federico Lenardon entitled "International rule early boats". Followed by welcome cocktail for all participants.

Saturday 9 September 2023

  • 10.30 am: Briefing for all classes in the covered area of ​​the Yacht Club Monfalcone
  • 12.00: Warning signal for first stage "International Hannibal Classic" and second stage "Classic Metre Race".
  • 18.30: Presentation of the book "Classic Sailing Hulls" with the author, Admiral of Squadra (r) Cristiano Bettini.  
  • 20.00 pm: Buffet for all participants at the Marina Monfalcone.

Sunday September 10 2023

  • 12.00: Warning signal for the second stage "International Hannibal Classic" and third stage "Classic Metre Race".
  • 18.30 pm: Final awards ceremony at the Monfalcone Yacht Club.
