Iran and Türkiye increasingly closer, Raisi flies to Ankara

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan he discussed by telephone with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim raisi late in the evening the day before yesterday, in anticipation of Raisi's arrival in Ankara today for a significant bilateral meeting. The Turkish presidency announced yesterday morning that, during the phone call, the recent acts of "violation" of the 4-day truce by the Israeli army were addressed. The importance of making the ceasefire permanent to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip was underlined.

In addition to this theme, there are several topics on the agenda in view of the meeting between the leaders of two important Islamic nations. Erdogan reiterated the need for a united reaction of Muslim countries to Israeli attacks. He proposed the Turkey as a guarantor for the Palestinians and supported the creation of a protection system that progressively leads to the formation of a Palestinian state. L'Iran, a major Hamas supporter finances the terrorist organization, while Turkey provides a safe haven for Hamas leaders in exile. Ankara and Tehran are among the only nations, along with Qatar and Egypt, to maintain relations with Lebanese Hamas and Hezbollah.

For Iran, rapprochement with Turkey is essential, especially after being left out of the negotiations that led to the hostage exchange and ceasefire. At the same time, Erdogan is seeking the support of the Iranian ayatollahs to consolidate his position as an interlocutor of the Islamic world, as Turkey is also a member of NATO.
