Israel in Gaza with robots, drones and AI. Special forces like in a video game

Entering the Gaza Strip? A challenge for which the Israelis have been preparing for some time because sooner or later it would have been a tactical eventuality they had to face. Now the time has come because after the macabre incursion of the Hamas militias last September 7, nothing is as before, it is necessary to eradicate the evil that, over the years, has metastasized among the Palestinian population.

Gianluca Di Feo on Repubblica revealed some secrets of the operation that precedes the actual invasion of the ground troops. Robots guided by artificial intelligence will be used, we are talking about an unmanned division of tanks, bulldozers, mine clearers and self-propelled machine guns. To enrich the operational scenario, a swarm of reconnaissance drones: some as small as insects, others flying at high altitude, equipped with infrared technology to capture the heat of bodies, lasers to unmask hiding places, radar to discover tunnels under the sand, antennas to locate cell phones and radios.

All data that is cross-referenced in "real time" by artificial intelligence to find militiamen and their explosive traps.

Each special forces soldier in the field will have their own defined objective, in order to avoid collateral damage. The modern soldier will find himself as in a video game, he will have to shoot only on the targets illuminated by the AI: an O will indicate the enemy while an

As Di Feo writes, this tactical innovation was designed by Daniel Gold, the head of the research department of the Ministry of Defense who created the Iron Dome anti-missile system. Gold has spent a lot of time developing algorithms suitable for urban conflicts: “From inside the vehicles traveling along roads surrounded by smoke it is impossible to realize the situation: the men are under stress and you have to decide in fractions of a second whether that silhouette that can be glimpsed behind a door is a woman with her little child in her arms or a militiaman with an anti-tank missile. The AI can instantly compare all the images and offer a suggestion. Then it will always be the human being who pulls the trigger".

This new technology, only sketched out by the Americans in Afghanistan, will therefore be tested for the first time in the Gaza Strip. Today the use of AI in urban clashes could really make a difference in the face of a determined enemy like Hamas which uses many weapon systems and war tactics from abroad where Iran and perhaps even Russia could have made a contribution level to the militiamen who committed an attack on the occupied territories that will remain in history.
