The "crazy mayonnaise" of pro-Iranian groups

by Andrea Pinto

The situation in the Middle East continues to heat up. The attack on the American base in Jordan which cost the lives of three soldiers forced the president Joe Biden to raise the bar of tension, announcing a prompt response towards the executors and, above all, the instigators. Iran, according to intelligence reports, is the largest contributor of weapons and financing to pro-Shiite groups in the entire region which continues to be affected by low and medium intensity conflicts. The various crises that flare up as the days pass are all traced back to the "resistance" against the Axis of Evil, identified in a group of Western countries led by the United States and Israel.

However, the day after the attack on the American base, Iran was quick to point out that "resistance forces in the region did not receive orders from the Islamic Republic. They make their decisions to defend the Palestinian people independently.". Tehran also wanted to reiterate the danger “to widen the circle of conflict due to the continuous Israeli attacks on Gaza”.

Hossein Salamis, head of the Guardians of the Revolution, claims, not surprisingly, that his men do not want a war. The news Al-Araby al-Jadeed, writes Il Messaggero, has revealed an indiscretion about a secret meeting occurred last Monday in Baghdad between the commander of the Force Quds, the general Esmail Qaani, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, and some commanders of Shiite militias linked to Iran. The purpose of the meeting was to mitigate any possible escalation, trying to interfere with pro-Iranian groups who, apparently, would act in full autonomy without a precise common strategy shared with Iran. Theirs focus it is the liberation of Gaza from Tel Aviv troops.

Immediately after the meeting in Baghdad the Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah announced the suspension of all attacks against US forces in the Middle East.

even the Wall Street Journal wrote, in clear terms, about Iran's alleged difficulties in maintaining control of all groups affiliated with it in the region. In fact, after the attack by Hamas on 7 October, the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, foreseeing the inevitable, had summoned to Tehran all the leaders of the militias fighting under the common flag of the so-called resistance axis, to avoid any paternity for their actions on the field and avoid a consequent direct involvement of Iran in a large-scale war against the USA and Israel.

Despite Tehran's attentions, apparently, the various pro-Shiite militias do not want to listen to the "mother house" because they try to carve out important slices of influence in their areas of interest, such as the Houthi in the Red Sea, militias in Iraq and Hexbollah in Lebanon. A type of crazy mayonnaise which risks compromising Iran's position towards the USA and Israel, which is increasingly on a war footing, also in light of the internal pressures and difficulties due to the upcoming American elections and the growing unpopularity of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
