Turkey asks the UN to exclude the Kurds from the Constitutional Commission for Syria

According to the Nova agency, the party of the Democratic Union (Pyd), a group of Syrian Kurds part of the opposition to the government of Damascus, must not participate in the Constitutional Commission for Syria, established at the Congress of Sochi on 30 January last. .

Turkey is asking the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, according to what the Turkish daily “Hurriyet” reports today. Based on what was agreed at the National Congress for Syrian Dialogue, de Mistura has the task of selecting the members of the commission charged with revising the Syrian Constitution. A third of the body will be composed of representatives of the opposition to the government of Damascus.

Turkey has always been opposed to the involvement of the Pyd in the negotiations on Syria. Indeed, Ankara considers the formation of the Syrian Kurds to be a terrorist group due to its links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). For years engaged in a separatist struggle against Ankara, the PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

On January 20, the Turkish Armed Forces launched the “Olive Branch” operation against the Pyd and its militias supported by the United States, the People's Protection Units (YPG). The Turkish units are supported by the Free Syrian Army, an opposition group to the government of Damascus supported by Ankara.
