If they were tolerated before, today they are back to politics and preaching freely. After all, their nationalism was not in contrast with the policies of governments traditionally linked to the USA and strongly anti-Communist and anti-Russian.
In Ankara and Istanbul it can happen to come across old buildings that display the Turkish flag in the curious version of three small white crescents on a red background, it is said in the meaning of the great Ottoman Empire extended to three continents: Asia, Africa, Europe.
And yet in the most modern strata of Turkish society the idea has taken root that in order to enter Europe, it is necessary to do justice to the taboos that have so far prevented Ankara from recognizing the extermination of Armenians and other minorities (Kurds and Greeks) carried out in 1915. -16 in the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.
It was the Gray wolves with flags and symbols that prevented the holding of the first conference on the Armenian genocide organized by 200 intellectuals in the small private university in Bilgi, a working-class district of Istanbul. The MHP, the political arm of the Gray Wolves, circulated a leaflet in the major cities of the country that said: «Fascism be cursed! Iron fist against the enemies of Muslims ”, with a photo of Hitler, flanked by that of Bush with a swastika on his arm.
