Leonardo: records of orders in the Weather business in the first half of the 2018

Leonardo, through the German subsidiary Selex ES GmbH, has signed a series of international contracts for the Meteor radar family for meteorological applications.

The offers followed the announcement in March of an important contract in Australia that will see the Company supply and install new radar systems for the S-Band and C-Band in the country.

Among the new agreements in the foreground the African continent, in which Selex ES GmbH was chosen to supply and install X-Band meteorological radar systems in airports in Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and Madagascar. The systems will be used to detect the phenomenon of windshear, convective currents and turbulence, so as to provide timely information to air traffic controllers. In these systems will be integrated the proprietary solution of Leonardo ShearScout® for windshear detection that includes Meteor 60DX meteorological radars.

In the Asia-Pacific area, Selex ES GmbH will supply meteorological radars and systems to customers in Malaysia and Indonesia. In the first country, the Company will provide three Meteor 60DX meteorological radars, including its proprietary Rainbow 5 software for the integrated processing and visualization of data from various sensors and the web-based SmartWx decision support system. In Indonesia, the government agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), has chosen Leonardo to provide an integrated turnkey system that will include a national data processing center gathered by more radar systems that will use Rainbow 5 proprietary software.The system, initially composed of 21 integrated radar, will be able to include more than 60 systems from other suppliers.

In the Americas, Selex ES GmbH has signed a contract to install the first Rainscanner meteorological radar system in Peru. The radar will be used by a Peruvian University for scientific research in the fields of meteorology, climatology, ecology and agricultural development. In particular, Rainscanner will detect and monitor the eco-climatic threats on the northern coast of Peru, of particular importance in the case of the El Niño phenomenon, which produces extreme meteorological phenomena in the region. In addition, a Bermuda customer selected the company to upgrade its current K-strip radar system with S-band. The Meteor 1500S radar currently installed will be upgraded to the Meteor 1700S: an S-Band, Klystron weather radar with dual-polarization technology.

New contracts also in Europe with consolidated customers such as Météo France, the French meteorological service, which has signed a framework contract with the company to supply up to six S-Band magnetron radar systems, with the aim of modernizing the French meteorological radar network , replacing the existing systems in France and those in use with the overseas departments. From North Europe, a further framework contract for five Meteor 735C C-band magnetron meteorological radars.

The latest successes, obtained in the context of selection on a competitive basis, confirm the company's ability to develop technologies and systems and strengthen its position in the international meteorological radar market.
