Libya: Shaking Tobruk to repair water desalination plant

Yesterday, in the square of the Martyrs in Tobruk, the inhabitants of the eastern city of Libya protested against the breakdown of the water desalination plant and its failure to repair it, which caused a sharp reduction in the supply of water resources. The protesters issued an ultimatum to the city-based parliamentarians giving them a week to resolve the crisis and threatening new, stronger protest initiatives to block the activities of the House of Representatives and close the Port of Harraga and Brega which host two major oil terminals. The historical region of Cyrenaica, which extends into eastern Libya, is administered by a so-called "transitional" government, not internationally recognized, based in al Baida, halfway between the cities of Benghazi and Tobruk, led by former premier Abdullah al Thinni. The "rebel" executive is loyal to the commander of the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA), General Khalifa Haftar, appointed "field marshal" by the Tobruk House of Representatives, the Libyan parliament born in 2014.
