The offensive on Derna was launched by Haftar After the liberation of Benghazi. At the moment the city is controlled by the Shura dei Mujaeddin Council of Derna and a group of allied Islamic militias who have been fighting together for three years for the defense of the city. For several months, Haftar's forces have effectively besieged the city by positioning themselves in different points around it in an attempt to squeeze it in a vise and implement an embargo that effectively prevents the arrival of weapons and other support to the Islamic militias. Recently, the Libyan MP Intisar Shanib had raised the hypothesis that
the council of the shura of the mujahideen of Derna could disband and join the Libyan army. This eventuality, however, seems to vanish with the continuation of the clashes.
