London, Big Ben for four years

The last tolls will be at noon, then Big Ben, London's iconic clock tower, will be 'packed up' for refurbishment and will be silent for four years. The Westminster Parliament approved the work some time ago after having ascertained that the famous Clock hung in a worrying way, bending almost half a meter from the perpendicular. But the decision was not painless, Prime Minister Theresa May herself showed all her bewilderment: "Not hearing its tolls for four years is not right". At the invitation of the premier, the deputies will meet immediately after the holidays to study the issue and decide on what to do also in the light of a huge expense to be faced: 29 million pounds in fact the amount to invest to make Big Ben return straight. Icon of the British capital, the clock, designed in Neo-Gothic style by Augustus Pugin, strikes every quarter of an hour. The tower was also renamed Elisabeth Tower on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The largest bell weighs 13,7 tons for a height of 2,2 meters and a diameter of 2,7. Hours are played on the 'E' at the 118 decibel level. Four other smaller bells ring every quarter of an hour.
