Ukraine urgently needs “peace” before it is too late

For a credible peace, compromise could really make a difference, but triggering unpredictable scenarios because this marks the failure of the West in the face of the Russian dictatorship.

Despite Ukrainian efforts, Russia does not give up on the ground, indeed it continues to conquer important slices of territory in Donbass. If Western aid and ammunition are slow to arrive, Kyiv's fate appears inexorably sealed. This, despite the 5 billion promised by Europe to the G7 the day before yesterday and the approximately 12 billion that are about to be fired by the US Congress. The NYT revealed yesterday that the United States, in addition to significant funding, would also provide operational support on the ground. There would be 12 secret CIA bases, deployed on the border with Russia, with the function of training the Ukrainian soldiers who are part of the2245 unitand an team military in charge of recovering Russian war remnants (drones, pieces of missiles, armament electronics, etc.) to study their technology and encrypted encryption systems.

The truth that emerges from the statements of the experts is that the Western arms industry is not ready, or organized, to produce in time the munitions necessary to continue the war, while the countries that support Ukraine do not want to grant other munitions coming from from its arsenals, already insufficient in themselves to deal with a persistent and high intensity conflict such as the Russian-Ukrainian one.

There is also a shortage of men to send to the front: an entire generation has been lost due to the losses suffered. This is why yesterday there were some Ukrainian hints that they wanted to start a credible peace plan. Probably because with the next American and European elections on the horizon nothing can be taken for granted anymore. What is certain is that Ukraine will unfortunately have to cede pieces of territory and abandon the initial idea of reconquering them entirely. The compromise could really make a difference, but trigger unpredictable scenarios because it also marks the failure of the West in the face of the Russian dictatorship.

The news was last night, Ukraine and its foreign partners may invite Russia to a future summit for peace to discuss ending the invasion of Moscow that began two years ago, a senior Ukrainian official said.

Switzerland, in fact, will host the Global Peace Summit to discuss a peace bill proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which could be presented to Russia during a second meeting at a later date, he said Andriy Yermak, Zelensky's chief of staff.

“A situation may arise where together we call on the representatives of the Russian Federation to end this war and return to a just peace”, he said during a televised conference in Kyiv.

Zelensky had announced his peace project for the first time during the G20 last November which included the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity and the total withdrawal of Russian troops. Kyiv promised, on that occasion, that it would not sit at a table with Moscow until all Russian troops had left Ukrainian territory.

The Kremlin had, therefore, stated that there was no basis for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and that Kyiv's peace plan, as structured, was inadmissible.

Now the situation on the field has profoundly changed.
