Italian Navy in park in Mozambique

Ship Federico Martinengo, seventh unit of the FREMM class (European Multi-Mission Mission Frigate), will visit the port of Maputo from 8 to 11 September 2018.

After three years, a unit from the Navy, having traveled more than 5000 nautical miles, arrives on the shores of Mozambique to bring the tricolor and national excellence.

The stop in the Port of Maputo is configured in a broader project for the development of cooperation relations between the two countries, the search for future opportunities for joint training and enhancement of mutual knowledge, so as to favor the level of interoperability between the Armed Forces of the two States.

It will also be an opportunity to show the latest FREMM delivered to the Navy and promote the country system in an international context.

Nave Martinengo, at the peak of its first cycle of use, from the 6 August participates in the first operational deployment outside the area and from the usual national gravity basins, thus completing a path during which, passing through the operational sea training at the Training Center of the Navy, he obtained the certification for participation in the operational missions and tested his First Crew. He will return to his homeland in December.

Insights on the F. Martinengo ship
Federico Martinengo ship, construction no. 6247, is the seventh Unit of the Italian-French FREMM program and the third commissioned in the GP (General Purpose) version. Distinguished by the F596 optical badge, the Unit was built in the Fincantieri plants of Riva Trigoso. He then continued the construction work in the Fincantieri del Muggiano plant. It is the first Naval Unit of the Italian Navy to bear the name of the Hero MOVMM CA Federico Martinengo. Its characteristics (PTF platform and CS combat system) make it suitable for multi-mission use:

• Fundamental role in the Device for Defense and Maritime Security;

• Contribution to the Sea Control of areas of national interest ensuring presence, surveillance and contribution to the MSA, Maritime Situational Awareness;

• Projection of capacity from the sea and the sea (Naval Gun Fire Support NGFS, Support for Special Forces Detachment, Italian national evacuation, Law Enforcement);

• Escort of Capital Ship, Hight Value Unit, or merchant units.

Nave Federico Martinengo was designed in the name of flexibility of use and versatility,

it can therefore guarantee numerous complementary activities:

• Ability to conduct operations in telemedicine,

• Personal evacuation by helicopters;

• Supply of drinking water;

• Packing of hot meals;

• Arrangement for supply of electric current.

Ship Federico Martinengo was handed over to the Navy the 24 April 2018. Since delivery, the Ship is based in the naval base of La Spezia and is employed by the First Naval Division (COMDINAV UNO).
