Masaf, at the start with Mimit and Salute to decrees for clear labeling of insect-based products

The four decrees on the labeling of insect-based products signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, in agreement with the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso and with the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci.

The provisions, which saw the agreement yesterday in the State-Regions Conference, contain specific indications to be included on the label for all products and preparations intended for human consumption obtained through the use of Acheta domesticus (domestic cricket), larva of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm), Alphitobius diaperinus larva (lesser mealworm) and Locusta migratoria.

“Our goal is to provide clear information and strengthen people's capacity for discernment with respect to the fundamental issue of food. I do not consider insects in competition with the foods of the Mediterranean diet, but I believe it is essential to avoid that Made in Italy products are confused with these flours. This requires specific labeling on these products”, commented the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry Francesco Lollobrigida, during the press conference held this morning at Masaf together with the Ministers of Health and Enterprise and Made in Italy, Orazio Schillaci and Adolfo Urso, and to the National Coordinator of the Agricultural Policy Commission of the Regions Conference, Federico Caner.

"At the basis of the provisions signed today is the principle of transparency on which the ability to choose of consumers is based, who must know how a product was made, where it comes from and what it is made with, to be free to use it or not ”, confirmed the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, underlining how this objective was achieved “in an extraordinarily rapid time, demonstrating the fact that the Meloni Government is cohesive and works in collaboration with the Regions for the protection of Italian specificity and Made in Italy”.

The Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci then reassured: “We will monitor carefully also thanks to the strict control of the carabinieri of the NAS both in the use of these flours and in compliance with the obligations of transparency and health protection. This Government wants to defend consumers from possible mixes, with the use of insect flours in our typical products such as pasta and pizza”.

"The use of flours from insects must be clearly explained, as well as the possible health risks", finally underlined Federico Caner, National Coordinator of the Agricultural Policy Commission of the Regions Conference, who reiterated: "We need clear information on the packaging of all these products, including their display to the public in clearly identifiable compartments and dedicated shelving”.
