Middle East: USA vetoes UN resolution against recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

According to the Nova agency, the United States vetoed today a UN Security Council resolution (UN) calling on President Donald Trump to revise his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel and transferring the US diplomatic headquarters to the Holy City.

This was reported by the newspaper "New York Times". The draft resolution received 14 votes in favor and one against, the US one. A vote that, for the newspaper, once again brings out the isolation of the United States in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The US ambassador to the UN, Nkki Haley, has censored the vote of her colleagues in the Security Council, reiterating that Trump's decision is the "recognition of the obvious" and that among the "folds of diplomatic jargon, someone pretends to say to America where to hold its embassy ". The resolution drafted by Egypt reaffirms the position held by the Security Council in resolutions expressed for over 50 years that refuse to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem.

The draft resolution also specified that no state should establish its own embassy in Jerusalem. The final status of the Holy City must be resolved through negotiations. The vote was held two days after US Vice President Mike Pence's visit to Jerusalem. The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, who was supposed to meet Pence, canceled the appointment in protest.
