Migrants: Germany and France slap Italy

(by Francesco Matera) The The World reported the news that Germany had written to the Italian government to temporarily stop the reception of migrants on its territory, more precisely he wrote clearly that the “voluntary solidarity mechanism is suspended for the moment, due to the strong migratory pressure towards the Federal Republic".

The drastic German decision, according to officials of the Ministry of the Interior, is due to the fact that, according to them, Italy does not respect the Dublin rules which require the country of first arrival to take back asylum seekers.

Also according to German officials, since the beginning of the year the Meloni government has no longer accepted migrants who arrived in Italy and then moved to Germany or other EU countries.

Last December 22, the Italian Ministry of the Interior communicated to the Berlin authorities that "due to technical reasons, linked to limited reception capacities, transfers to Italy were temporarily suspended".

France has also raised its shields and has repeatedly warned that it wants to close the border between Menton and Ventimiglia. According to the French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin in recent weeks the flow of migrants has increased by 100%.

France and Germany, therefore, trigger a crisis that has no equal within the European Union where a common problem risks worsening diplomatic relations between the three main founding countries which, not surprisingly, are also the three strongest economies.

The German Interior Minister forced his hand Nancy Faser who at the beginning of the summer emphasized the issue of the voluntary solidarity mechanism which should have committed to the redistribution of approximately 10 thousand migrants to other EU countries in the shortest possible time. According to the voluntary solidarity mechanism, Germany has offered its willingness to welcome 3.500 refugees while the other member countries, despite the agreements, have never offered a real willingness to welcome. At the end of August, only 2.500 immigrants were redistributed, of which 1.700 to Germany alone.

Germany as well as France, net of the willingness to welcome migrants following the mechanism signed with the Dublin rules, also experience the unfortunate phenomenon of uncontrolled flows of illegal immigrants who cross the borders from Italy towards Europe.

It is clear, therefore, that the problem will have to be resolved at a structural level by the European Union to avoid unproductive friction between member states. Having decided to temporarily block the voluntary solidarity mechanism is a symbolic signal from Germany to highlight a problem that has now gotten out of hand and which will tend to increasingly compromise the stability of the already fragile and inconsistent community reception system. To pay for it (in primis) it is Italy that since the beginning of the year has exceeded 110 thousand arrivals with a trends continuously growing due to the Tunisian economic crisis and the turbulence in the Sahel area.
