Milan - Illicit trafficking of waste to Bulgaria

The carabinieri of the NOE in Milan seize 17 wagons with 815 tons of special waste

The prevention and contrast action of the Carabinieri Command for Environmental Protection continues incessantly to stem the phenomenon of illicit storage of waste.

After the seizure of numerous illegal or abandoned areas in Northern Italy used as waste dumps, at the Lecco railway station, the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operating Unit of Milan, in collaboration with the Customs Agency and Monopoli - Como Customs Office - Territorial Operational Section of Lecco, and with the Lombardy Regional Agency for Environmental Protection - Lecco Department, have proceeded to check a cross-border shipment of waste about to be sent to a recovery plant in Bulgaria.

From the vision of the supplied documentation it emerged how said waste, instead of being made up of recoverable plastic waste, as certified in documents, turned out to be composed mainly of mixed industrial materials (plastic and rubber, pieces of fabric, foam rubber, tetrapack, mixed packaging and more ), resulting from processing operations already carried out at other plants and which did not present further exploitable or recyclable fractions.

Therefore, at the end of the checks, the entire shipment consisting of a load of 582 bales placed on 17 railway wagons for a total weight of 815 tons was seized, whose value is around 130 thousand.

The investigations of the Carabinieri of the NOE of Milan are still in progress, on behalf of the Deputy Prosecutor of the Republic at the Court of Milan, Dott. Francesco VM DE TOMMASI, since it cannot be excluded that said waste had to be sent abroad for subsequent disposal. only from Lombardy, but also from other parts of the national territory.

In the coming days the activities of sampling and characterization of the waste will be carried out in order to proceed with the subsequent removal and transport to authorized facilities.
