The Russian ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, who spoke at the UN during the Security Council meeting, accused the British government of "playing with fire" with false accusations about the role of Moscow in the poisoning of the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and daughter in Salisbury.

Nebenzia has defined the accusations against Moscow as a "fake story", and he added "We told our British colleagues that they are playing with fire and that they will repent".

At a request for clarification from journalists at the end of the meeting, Nebenzi replied that "a normal person should repent" to affirm untrue things. Still in the intervention at the Council meeting, which had been requested by Russia, the diplomat accused London of having put other countries against Moscow: "you have started a wave that has come to New York".
