Occupations, Valditara: “70 thousand euros in damages to Severi and blocked teaching. Those responsible for the occupations must always be identified"

"The occupation of the "Severi" institute in Milan would have caused, according to an initial estimate communicated to me by the principal, approximately 70.000 euros in damage. PNRR material recently supplied to the school by the Ministry was also damaged. The occupation lasted three days but caused the institute to be unusable which will continue from January 30th until February 17th with serious damage to the students' education. According to what was reported by the manager, the occupation was carried out by around thirty students out of approximately 1.500 students attending the institute. The occupants, again according to the principal's testimony, entered the school with their faces covered by balaclavas and set up barricades to block the entrances. In these conditions, identifying those responsible for the damage is not easy.

I believe it is essential that school directors take action, as required by law, to report the occupations to the police so that they can proceed to identify the occupants and therefore take legal action for compensation for damages. There are other tools for peaceful and democratic discussion among students, one of these is self-management. The occupations create serious damage to the community, deprive students of the constitutional right to study, impede the administrative activity of schools: they must no longer be tolerated".

Thus the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara.
