UN: North Korean-US dialogue presents "great potential and rapid progress"

The announcement of a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un opens up new scenarios characterized by "potential for kidnapped progress".

These are the words of Tomas Ojea Quintana pronounced today during the presentation of his report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva in which he highlighted that a "meaningful dialogue" with Pyongyang is "possible" and evoked "encouraging opportunities" for cooperation . At the same time, however, the report paints a heavy picture of the situation in North Korea, with "serious violations of human rights aggravated by a climate of political volatility and the rhetoric of the conflict" with the United States.

"We observe what appears to be a potential for rapid progress on the political and security front, with communication channels progressively developing between the two Koreas and with the United States, and historic summit plans in the near future ... my main message today is that any progress on the security dialogue front must be accompanied by a parallel expansion of the dialogue on human rights ”.
