Perego. Italy-France, a common defense in the Quirinale treaty

“The Italy-France Quirinale Treaty” stated the Undersecretary of State for Defense Matteo Perego of Cremnago who spoke at the event Dialoghi Italia: Defense and the Quirinale Treaty on the initiative of the IREFI Institute (institute for economic relations between France and Italy) and of the French CEPS (Centre for Studies and Strategic Perspectives) "one year after its entry into force, it confirms the country's strong desire to continue dialogue and military and strategic cooperation with France with determination and coherence".

“The values common to the two countries” continues Perego “of peace and security, respect for human dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms, democracy, equality and the rule of law, must be defended and promoted against all types of threat that can call them into question, thus reaffirming, in a spirit of solidarity, the will to strengthen European Defense and the posture of deterrence and defense of the Atlantic Alliance, being the European Union and the Atlantic Treaty Organization of North destined to act as mutually reinforcing strategic partners".

“The treaty encourages the development of synergies in terms of capabilities and operations” concludes the Undersecretary “On the operational front, Italy and France participate together in numerous UN missions (UNIFIL in Lebanon), NATO and EU (IRINI in the Mediterranean, Atalanta in the Ocean Indian), but also to ad hoc missions such as EMASOH (European Maritime Awareness in the Strait of Hormuz) to guarantee a safe and stable navigation environment around the Strait of Hormuz.

Consistent with the Treaty will also be the new Aspides mission to protect and support the merchant fleet in the Red Sea threatened by the Yemeni Houthis, a mission that will see the two countries side by side in the fight against a hybrid conflict.

Many concrete initiatives have already been implemented which arise from industrial cooperation projects already underway some time ago. There is significant growth potential but it can be said that in the Defense sector the approach has been effective. In space, cyber and underwater it is appropriate that we continue to grow, strategically, operationally and tactically towards a consolidated common European defense to protect national interests and the international community."
