"More trees for more children", the national campaign promoted by Mellin

With the planting of 3.000 young trees, the Piedmont Park also enters the multi-year project of Mellin which aims to support the well-being of families and the birth rate by reforesting and requalifying green areas on the Italian territory

One tree for every 50 new borns for a total of 9.000 trees per year. This is the heart of the "More trees for more children" project promoted by Mellin with the hope of being able to plant more and more trees throughout Italy to celebrate the resumption of births in our country. The initiative, in collaboration with AzzeroCO2, today he arrives in Turin, where the forestry work was completed which allowed the planting of 3.000 young trees in the "Piedmont Park", in southern Mirafiori, not far from the Sangone Park.

"The City of Turin implements its Climate Resilience Plan with a strategy to enhance the eco-systemic services generated by the territory, placing urban forestry in the foreground. In recent years we have planted more than 15.000 trees in extensive areas, such as the Piedmont, Colonnetti and Stura parks, and as many new plantations are planned this year - says the Councilor for Public Green, Alberto Unia -  Urban forest based solutions, also thanks to partners like AzzeroCO2 and Mellin, allow to establish a more sustainable and resilient city development model. It is a choral commitment to adapt to climate change that sees Turin among the Italian centers most committed to finding effective solutions that make the city more livable. "

The areas destined for the creation of new forests in 2020, including the City of Turin, were chosen through a digital contest activated by Mellin with the aim of having parents vote to define together the next green areas to be created or redeveloped on the Italian territory, in collaboration with AzzeroCO2. Turin is the first of the Italian cities involved in the initiative.

The "More trees for more children" project is inspired by the philosophy of Mellin's Parental Policy, a corporate platform that supports mothers and fathers in the optimal management of the family-work balance. A project that has become an important reference in our country and that is making proselytes in other companies too. Supporting the birth rate and families also means thinking about the future of the planet in which these children will grow up: for this reason Mellin is also committed to working for a increasingly suitable environment to welcome new families.

"Italy is a country that is gradually aging and it is essential to put in place actions that aim to ignite the right attention on the issue of birth rate - he claims Fabrizio Gavelli, CEO Specialized Nutrition South Europe and AD Mellin -Mellin believes that the health of the planet and the health of people are interconnected and dreams of a future where more and more children grow up in a world that preserves nature. With this project we want to send a message of commitment to the future and plant hope today in a country with more green areas and more children. "

The initiative is part of the National Green Mosaic Campaign, conceived and promoted by AzzeroCO2 with the patronage of the most important national institutions and associations, with an ambitious goal: to plant 300.000 new trees and protect 30.000 hectares of existing forests throughout the national territory.

"We are proud of the collaboration with Mellin - declares Sandro unglued, CEO of AzzeroCO2 - especially for an initiative such as "More trees for more children" which has as its main objective the protection of the environment and the healthy growth of children through the planting of trees thus redeveloping green areas. The forestry intervention carried out in the Municipality of Turin will contribute to improving the usability of the Piedmont Park and will offer all residents leisure opportunities and will empower them on the need to protect the environment in which they live. "

This initiative falls within the broader panorama of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, carried out by the City of Turin jointly with the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Piedmont Region and the Ministry of the Environment, as part of the Memorandum of understanding for the development of green infrastructure through contributions and compensations, signed among the aforementioned entities last year.

The area subject to intervention, identified by the Public Green Service of the City, which together with Azzero CO2 also defined the characteristics and methodology of the planting and accompanied and controlled the correct execution of the works, is located within a urban park that had a sparse tree cover and mainly consisted of species that are not typical of the area, such as cedar and American maple.

The young trees have been positioned in scattered groups with the aim of creating thickets interspersed with free areas to enhance the spontaneous dynamics of the vegetation and obtain an ecological restoration with the reintroduction of native species such as downy oak, hornbeam, elm, field maple and ash.
